Wooden grave-markers from Reformed cemeteries of Hajdúság

Imre Égerházi’s paintings include creations related to folk art and folk decorative art. He regularly drew and made engravings of the headstones or grave-markers of different countries, especially Hungarian cemeteries. These, of course, include not only folk decorative art, but also works by contemporary artists of the time. Many artworks were made about the headstones of the cemeteries of his narrower homeland, Hajdúság.
As the Reformed Church dominates both in the cities of Hajdú and in Debrecen, it is no coincidence that the works created primarily depict Reformed cemetery headstones. The artist himself was also a member of the Reformed congregation.
The color scheme of the 1991 painting reflects the dominance of blue that reappears after the state of clinical death. The grave-markers read „A.B.F.R.A.” The surnames of his mother’s side and her ancestors (Hajdú, Gaál, Péntek) are also visible.

The painting is the property of the Déri Museum in Debrecen, but currently not exhibited.
