The Gyergyószárhegy church

The painting was made in 1993.

In the art of Imre Égerházi, Transylvanian-themed paintings constantly dominated with minor omissions. In the early 70s he painted mainly the landscapes and people of Gyimes, while in the 90s the landscapes of Gyergyó region dominated. One of the reasons for this is that in the course of his artistic organizing activities, as one of the main patrons of Hungarian artists across the border, he contacted the Gyergyószárhegy Creative Camp led by Lajos Zöld in the second half of the 1980s. Imre Égerházi first invited Transylvanian painters to the artists’ colonies in Hajdúböszörmény and Hortobágy. Later, he himself regularly visited the Lázár Castle in Gheorgheni, where the Gheorgheni Creative Camp operated and still operates today.

From the beginning of the 90s, many paintings on the theme of Gheorgheni were made, forming an outstanding part of the oeuvre. During this period, the thick, black contours had completely disappeared from the pictures of Égerházi, his world of color had become brighter and more cheerful. White walls, as well as yellowish, brownish, reddish colours characterize the painting.
